America’s Next Top Model judge Valerie Bertinelli has filed for legal separation from her husband Tom Vitale, according to reports.
The 60-year-old was said to have asked for custody of their two children, Mac and Livingston, before requesting that her husband be given sole custody of the children.
Bertinelli and Vitale, 50, got married in Las Vegas in January 2001.
The pair, who share their home in the Los Angeles area, have been together for 17 years.
However, they have reportedly been experiencing marital problems for two years.
Their divorce was filed in Los Angeles on Monday and obtained by Radar Online.
“Valerie wanted to ensure that the kids are well and had no intention of ending the marriage,” said a source.
“It was a lengthy process and it wasn’t an easy decision, but Tom was the one to make it.”
The source also said the divorce papers had been filed without a pre-nuptial agreement in place, but she was reported to have submitted a pre-nup.
“They have not been getting along because of Tom’s drinking and Val wants more input in all decisions with her children,” the source said.
“There is nothing romantic going on between the two of them anymore.”
Valerie Bertinelli is most well-known for starring in the ’90s television show Veronica Mars, which ran from 2004 to 2007, as well as becoming a TV judge on the competition show America’s Next Top Model from 2002 to 2014.

She is also an author of 12 novels, three cookbooks and has written several television movie scripts.
Vitale has played pro-surfer and unofficial spokeswoman for the sport on the 2005 MTV series The Thirsty Whale.
He is also the owner of a company called The Sportsman Network, which designs outdoor equipment, and is also involved in real estate.
