Incorrect BBC story on Ahmaud Arbery

The BBC has been informed that an online article we published containing an error was inadvertently published last night.

We apologise for any confusion this may have caused.

Ahmaud Arbery was jailed for life in 2015

Arbery was jailed for life in 2015 for the sexual and violent abduction, murder and rape of seven-year-old Garveen Khan.

He was freed after less than half his sentence, for time served, but a child abuse conviction is the subject of a High Court appeal and other criminal proceedings.

The BBC erroneously stated last night that Arbery has been convicted in a higher court of sexual abuse of a child aged 10.

We have deleted the online article and updated our Digital Fact Checking service in order to ensure that the fact is corrected as soon as possible.

We have also removed this story from our Online Fact Checking database and apologies for any offence caused.
